Before: The Formation and Continuation of Nichiren Buddhism’s Identity: An Exclusive and Persecuted Community, Then and Now

After: An Exclusive and Persecuted Religious Community, Then and Now: Nichiren Buddhism to Soka Gakkai

I decided to just drop the main title and let the original subtitle draw you in. I feel that it definitely catches the eye more than "The Formation and Continuation of Nichiren Buddhism's Identity"

The second title is much more engaging. At first glance it draws in the reader with your strong word choices, "exclusive" and "persecuted." It is a long title, but I do not think it detracts from your paper. I have not read it though, so again, its up to you to decide.

The second packs more of a punch in my opinion. it immediately describes the context what the paper will be about and then gives the Proper nouns that give a more in depth at what exactly it is
