My Current Title: John Milton’s Paradise Lost: A Study of Historical and Religious Interpretation

Alternatives: When Satan is The Hero

Paradise Lost and the Problems with Sympathy for Demons

Satan Remains the Most Controversial Judeo-Christian Figure

While I think the second alternative is really solid, I am not sure of which would be best. I tried to apply each of the different forms described on page 71 of Stylish Academic Writing, and some came out better than others.

My favorite is your original title, but I'm also a fan of the second title. Personally, I would keep your original title but both are strong contenders!

How about: "Paradise Lost (in italics) and the Controversy Over Sympathy for the Devil"?

Your first title is perfectly fine, although I think you could still tighten it up a bit.

I like the "When Satan is the hero" title as it is very captivating but your original seems to potentially fit your thesis better
