Before:

Not surprisingly, after reading Salome’s story, the Catholic Church and dancing have had a long, ambivalent past often involving explicit condemnation due to its association with promiscuity. In an attempt to remove the Church and its faithful further from the worldly cultures, most of the early Synods and Councils after the legalization of Christianity discuss the place of marriage, clerical obligations, increasingly anti-Semitic doctrines, and overall groundwork for acceptable Christian conduct.

After: Different Point of View

Of course we hate dancing. All it brings about is lude behaviour. If women bring about such destruction through dance then we must eradicate all potential for it. Thus our cannon includes laws against marital celebrations, clerical obligations to enforce, keeping away from Jews and their revelries so that we may set ourselves apart as Christians.

Cosette, I love this. It adds depth to your paper. By reversing perspectives or changing the point of view, we acquire more knowledge on the topic. We are able to dissect the brains of the opponents. Why do they believe this? This is helpful for the writers of the opposing perspectives because they are able to validate their case in a more thorough manner.

Cosette,
Good revision. It makes the interaction feel much more personal and I was much more drawn into the discussion almost instantly.

Oh wow, this change gives your paper SUCH a different vibe! I never thought to reverse perspectives like this in a formal paper, so this exercise is extremely interesting to me. It goes from sounding like a formal research paper to an informal, argumentative paper.

I like this a lot, Cosette! I think it is a really interesting way of introducing alternative perspectives in your paper. Also in writing this way, you have to get more into the mindset of these people who hold such stifling beliefs about dance, which in turn will enhance your ability to write about the issue as a whole. Also, this writing in the edit feels so much more personable, and will make it easier for the audience to remain engaged and entertained. Great stuff!

This was such an interesting change of perspective. It highlights the absurdity of their argument which gives you leverage to present your argument.

Cosette,
I really like the directness of your "after" segment. It's very striking and right to the point which also catches the reader's attention.
