Before: There was only one course forward, only that of “the ship of Myoho-renge-kyo enables one to cross the sea of the sufferings of birth and death.” Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra become inseparable due to the absolute belief in the text’s soteriological potential.

After: There was only one course forward, only that of “the ship of Myoho-renge-kyo enables one to cross the sea of the sufferings of birth and death.” Nichiren and the Lotus Sutra become inseparable due to the absolute belief in the text’s potential to save an individual from suffering.

I couldn't think of much that could be considered really extreme jargon that wasn't in some form necessary, like mappo and such.

You did not make much of an edit here, but I do like what you changed. I think the edit makes it much clearer what you are trying to articulate, and will be easier for other audiences to understand as well. Although I must admit, I like the phrase "the text’s soteriological potential"; I just don't think it is very accessible for other readers, so you should go with the edit.
