Throughout the centuries, John Milton's Paradise Lost is a text that has been the center of many debates and conversations. The opinions that academia holds about the poem are varied, but the most controversial character in the text has always been Satan.  The harbinger of evil in the Judeo-Christian religion, many believe that Milton paints Satan in a positive light in his writing while many think that Satan is simply a metaphor for the struggles that Milton had been through in his earlier life. Through an examination of the many different opinions and writings of Satan in Paradise Lost, the author seeks to provide a glimpse into how controversial the character is and how the opinions surrounding him are so varied.
