Japan is home to many unique schools of Buddhism. In particular, Nichiren is a uniquely Japanese Buddhism, not tracing to any transmitted school. Nichiren was formed around a man of the same name, whose experiences fed into the ways in which the school identifies itself. This identity remains today. Through reading over the experiences of many historical events over the course of eight hundred years and interpretation of sutras, I seek to define what the cornerstones of Nichiren's identity are.
