Though the vampire movies have several dynamics from Dracula to Blade, I find these type of horror movies to be rather cliché and not as exciting as the others. These movies seem to be some what dark, boring, and exceptionally predictable. After watching these films, I would not say that this genre is one of my top five sub-genres, but I will see that I have a different perspective and outlook on these types of films. Simply due to the intrinsic values that the movies managed to display on the screen. Often looked upon as creatures that prowl throughout the night, I feel that these types of movies can be compared to several aspects of our everyday life. During the 1960-70s, people began to indulge in several types of activities that were frowned upon by those who had more traditional beliefs. From homosexuality to various types of experimental drugs, people within this time period were forced to hide their way of existing during the daytime and frolic the streets freely at night. Vampires are depicted as rather sexual beings. Whenever they consume blood, they experience some of the same actions and feels that an individual has a sexual encounter would feel. Aside from this, vampires often have to hide their true identities from everyday people. This is similar to people who remain “in the closet” about their sexuality in potential fear of the opinion/actions of others that are not like them. Our Vampire Ourselves was able to show the overall progress that homosexuals have made in regard to their self-expression in the 1970s. While they were able to show their true selves, people were forced to live in fear or the potential discrimination that they may face. Aside from the challenges of sexual identity and orientation, vampires exhibit all of the elements of sexual interactions. During Our Vampires Ourselves, it was brought up as to how vampires are the portions of our being that we attempt to suppress. Often times, more conservative views can make an individual feel disgraceful due to an excessive about of sexual activity. However, Deacon Brucke was able to reach a comfort level of displaying his flamboyancy and sexuality. He begins to become more carefree and free spirited. What We Do in the Shadows was a good film, however, it was some conventional and cliché. Everything that we expected a vampire to exhibit from a physical element was presented. It did not necessarily have the traditional gothic and dark feel. Rather it was somewhat pleasant and fun to watch. Only Lovers Left Alive was not necessarily a good movie in my opinion. Seeing an immortal vampire suddenly become sad because he was exhausted with living was not something I cared to see. It was somewhat boring and had too much of a flare for the dramatics. Though it was not an entire cliché, these movies were still good movies. There was an excellent balance of jokes and horror. Yet, these movies were not enough to change my overall perspective on vampire movies.
