I enjoyed the visual aspect of the movie Midsummar. The film was very optimistic from a cinematographic view. The use of light visuals caused the audience to become relaxed and lighthearted. This would lead to an increased element of surprise whenever something outlandish occurred. Dan’s lack of mental stability led to tragic events that occurred in the midst of celebratory events. Aside from this, the element of relationships was used to create a theme surrounding the central them. The viewers are able to see the instability in Dan and Christian’s relationship and that element plays a significant role in the overall perception of the movie. At the beginning of the breakup, the couple took a trip to Sweden is how of finding a new and profound sense of happiness. Sani has trouble removing herself, but ultimately finds her true level of peace upon entering the maypole competition and seeing the support of her friends around her. The location of the movie also plays a significant role in why I think this movie is unique. A ritual involving two older individuals committing suicide was one of the central events in this film. Dani was named May Queen and ultimately led to her ex-boyfriend’s demise after he cheated on her. This coincides with the idea of monstrous feminism that was the topic of the reading. The Witch was also a work that played a major role in this. In the earlier time periods, witches were looked down upon and some of the most feared individuals by religious authorities. They were often subject to religious persecution, especially considering they threatened the predominantly patriarchal societies in their respected time periods. The supernatural power that women possessed was thought to be dangerous as they could possibly take over the power that was in the hands of male leaders in their respected locations. Because of this, witchcraft became a threat to the religion and became a very intense religious issue. Within the Puritan society, Chusna stated that religious officials believed that “women’s bodies and souls were weak, submissive, and passive; thus, it was easier for the Devil to attack and penetrate them” (Chusna, 15) Tomasin joining a coven that rejected her previously known morals was a powerful moment in this chapter’s films and reading. She wanted to be more than a woman who was forced to play a submissive role. This was decided even after it was thought that she was vulnerable to being possessed and consumed by the Devil and his demonic ways. In my opinion, this concept is still exhibited in today’s society. Not only in the church, but in the governing body of the United States. Women and their bodies are placed under constant scrutiny. Women are made to feel that they have a specific way that they are supposed to act and if it somehow managed to offend anything in this predominantly male-controlled society, it is shut down. Therefore, this section of the class was interesting as it shows the horrors that women face due to breaking the status quo and how it pushed them to violence.
