In my opinion, Jordan Peele is one of the most important and dynamic directors of our current era. The movie, Us, was one of the most important and movies in today’s present issues. The fact that we were presented with Adelaide being younger and having an encounter with her tether played a major role in understanding that underlying issues have always been there, but most people choose to ignore them is fascinating. Years later, we are able to see the Tether family and the Tyler family interact with one another and show the different dynamics of their values from two different perspectives. The ending can be interpreted in several ways, so Peele allows the audience to develop their own unique perspective on what occurred. However, Peele was able to make clear the unfair treatments that certain groups in America face to a long history of being marginalized and placed into unfair socioeconomic conditions. The underrepresentation has managed to place people with talents that have the power to move mountains into social dungeons with limited resources to help them find a way out. The Tethered were born with the same talents as the Tylers. Yet. Due to being kept underground against their will, they were never able to exhibit these talents in the way that their counterparts were. Get Out did an excellent job of taking the cliché stereotypes and microaggressions that African Americans are troubled with on a daily basis and inverting them to fit Caucasian people. While Us shows the harsh realities that laid the foundation for the United States, Get Out managed to show the way that non-African Americans glorify the hardships that African Americans have faced in this country’s 400+ year history to fit and incline their own “culture”. The subtle microagressive nature of the interracial couple on the way to her parent’s house upstate and the insanely uncomfortable conversations about sports and President Obama provided humor yet emphasized the underlying awkwardness that microaggression towards minorities cause. Us manages to coincide with the writings of WEB DuBois. African Americans are challenged with the constant intrinsic battle within their own race. At the same time, African American people are forced to deal with the unfair racial disparities that plague their social, political, and economic lives. The Candyman embodied the elements of a horror movie, but it did not have an overall plot that gave rise to real horrors that are faced in society. Thus, I did not enjoy it as much as others. Racial issues have plagued this country since the beginning of time. Yet, many non-people of color find ways to negate or provide excuses as to what this country was truly built on. I feel that movies like Get Out and Us are important to allow those who have not faced or lived with these injustices to see what they are like from a more unique perspective. While some may view Peele’s movies as a more comic horror, those who have actually experienced it are able to see the various battles that they face in everyday life on a movie screen.
