I am aware art is used as a political vehicle, but before this class I never had thought of needle arts being used for political expression. The article “Stitch by Stitch…” goes on about the use of needlework that was used by the suffragists and last February there was a gallery opening on campus that was about the very subject, politics portrayed through traditionally feminine materials. Also, I never knew Craftivism was an actual term, I thought it was just made up for the class! I’m an art major and I have been making art that causes social and political questions, my most ambitious and controversial being campy sculptural fashion featuring vaginas, I cannot wait to learn how to crochet and possibly bring it into my major. I love to DIY and I know that’s punk, but now I’m seeing how punk crochet is within itself. I saw this as a pass time of older ladies, no judgements towards them, but it is much more hardcore then I would have thought.
