Craftivism

“Quiet” activism is an idea I have never heard of but is important to the class because knitting is a form of quiet activism. No words ever have to be voiced, but the message can come through loud and clear. In 2012, the Women’s March gained a lot of national coverage, one of the biggest symbols that came out of the march is the pussyhat. Everyone knows the bright pink hat, that comes to two points, symbolizing that of women’s genitalia. The creation of the pussyhat, helped start a movement to support women’s rights, put the chauvenist and sexist behavior of Donald Trump into the limelight. Much like the “liberty hats”, pussyhats, challenged authority, it was a symbol of something bigger and much more important in politics.

How has crafting raised awareness, not only for political movements but also people’s individual lives and illnesses? Why has crafting become a staple way to spread one another’s message?
