The idea that knitting is for only older women is mostly what I grew up knowing. Also, knitting and sewing are only for women is another idea I had growing up. But after reading this page about how important knitting was in the revolutionary war my perspective changed. The importance of sewing was huge because women stitched uniforms for men and could slip secret messages in their works that the enemy would not see. These stories are not talked about enough in my opinion. Think about it, we have never heard about any of this in any of the history books we read growing up. I also learned that Eleanor Roosevelt was a big-time knitter and helped start an effort to provide warm clothing for soldiers along with many other women who wanted to make a difference using the skills that they knew. Women contributed a lot more than people gave them credit for before they even had a voice.
