I found it interesting how during the revolution women became a critical use in boycotting English textiles. Women and their knitting where the reason that America could boycott English textiles and could still survive. They essentially ran the nation in terms of fabrics and helped America to separate. The spinning bees were a competition for women to see who could produce the most yarn. The woman who could was deemed a patriot. I found it interesting that patriot was a term only used for men but when a woman won the spinning bee, she too would be awarded the title of patriot. While women did not have many areas where they were allowed to contribute, they did what they were allowed to to the best of their ability. Eventually, sewing and knitting became a gender roll that was looked down upon by so called feminist. What I think is so empowering is that true feminism allows for women, men, and who ever can knit, sew, crochet, and craft freely. Knitting and crafting should not be looked down on as a womanly past time, but as a form of expression and empowerment for whoever decides to participate.
