In the past knitting was not done for fun as a hobby like it is now. Knitting was a source of work and extra income or to clothe family. These readings are showing how knitting was a feminine activity. Knitting was known as a woman's activity because of the time and patience require to complete the task and women had a lot of free time at home. A way that knitting helped to bring awareness to women's accomplishments is when people notice beautiful handmade crafts and see women on it and search to figure out more about there life and what they did. Knitting circles were very common during the revolutionary war. Knitting circles were also used for boycotting certain goods. During the war when soldiers needed more clothing the women would unravel the worn out clothing and knit newer clothing for the soldiers. The act of knitting was such a cozy and unthreatening activity that the British didn't think anything about how it was effecting them during the war.
