In reading the assignment for today, I was able to learn more about the history of knitting as an instrument for women to express their political and social stances without having to take physical action to fight for a cause that they have become passionate about. In our breakout rooms today my group discussed how knitting can be a form of silent activism, but throughout the reading I began to recognize that the products of craftivism hold a great deal of power in their messages. Although some women view knitting as an antifeminist activity that has been used to perpetuate feminine stereotypes, while others value it as an empowering and individual activity that extends beyond the work of just one person. The works that these women create portray a very strong message that juxtaposes the gentle nature of the medium with which they are created. I feel as though using a delicate medium to send political messages involving war allow for viewers to reflect on the true nature of the events that are happening around them and in this way I believe that craftivism can be powerful in its interpretation. I enjoyed seeing how knitting has been used throughout history as a tool with many uses such as rebellion, messaging, and symbolism in the United States, but I would also like to see how prevalent this form of craftivism has been in other countries and I would also like to know what causes correspond with the works as well.
