In today’s readings I found the idea of knitting as a way to promote community independence interesting. In our past readings, this idea was touched on in the discussion of America’s War for Independence, but the more current application of this kind of independence seems to me to be stepping away from fast fashion and using materials at hand to create sustainable articles of clothing. We’ve talked about the idea of knitting as activism, and in promoting independence there is an element of activism, but I feel that knitting for the purpose of creating clothing is more individualistic in its approach to craftivism. I personally care a great deal about the environment and about climate change and I feel as though refusing to participate in the production of fast and unsustainable fashion allows people to not only contribute unique accessories and clothing to their wardrobe, but it also sends others a subtle message about sustainability and I believe that it is an important topic to touch on. I wonder how much more sustainable it is to crochet/knit articles of clothing compared to other methods of manufacturing and I think it would be an interesting point to explore further.
