It’s interesting that needlework is stereotyped to be for women, but a man founded the first Revolutionary Knitting Circle group. These groups turn gender norms upside down and oppose various social divisions while being publicly represented by youthful males. This is good to fight the stigma that only women do this type of work, but it also feels like a slippery slope to me having men represent a group historically known as a way for women to express themselves; it’s as if the women are put back on the back burner. Again, its great that it represents men can knit to, but also women deserve to be at the forefront like they had been striving for to begin with. At that point it feels like these groups are almost going backwards. I believe they should let everyone have a chance to represent the group, regardless of gender, but don’t completely hide the women away thinking you are proving a point.
