I thought it was interesting when the article “Revolutionary Knitters call for Global Knit-ins To Protest G-8” mentioned that a male member of the group often was met with confusion or even uncomfortableness from onlookers. It seems so silly that something so simple and harmless as knitting could create this reaction just because of the crafter’s gender but it made me realize that I would be confused or at least make assumptions about a male if I saw them knitting or crocheting.
I also thought it was interesting that a woman in the Guardian article expressed that she “finds anger in activism emotionally exhausting and wants to broaden the activist space for people who want to do more but don’t feel marches, petitions or shouting loudly is for them”. I had always thought of activism as synonymous with those things, but I think that it opens so many more doors if people who are unable or uncomfortable advocating for causes in that in your face way to be able to do it a less confrontational way while still being powerful and effective.
