I had a lot of different thoughts on the articles this week. Like the other people who have already posted, the main thing that stuck out to me was the whitewashing of the knitting/crocheting community. Thus far we have discussed the discrimination that exists in the community regarding age and gender, so it was very interesting to finally address race. I think this is really relevant to discuss now as the Black Lives Matter movement is so prevelant in our current lives and politics. Another point that I took notice of in the Vox article was that knitting and crocheting are expensive pasttimes. We had previously discussed activists teaching these skills to lower income communities in order to teach people a new trade or to be self sufficient, but unless you can make a decent income off of sales of the products you make, it will most likely cost more out of pocket just for yarn. This is not to say that it is not a valuable skill to know in order to provide for yourself and family, but it is important to note how much it costs in order to aqcuire necessary materials for it.
