I think that using knitting to engage with political activism in ways that the everyday population can connect with is powerful. For example, rises in global temperatures are often portrayed by using graphs and charts, displaying numerical data that may be confusing or intimidating to those who have trouble understanding analytic data. Providing alternate ways to illustrate these concerns creatively through knitting, as the Tempestry Project does, makes the information more accessible and visible. It also adds a more emotional element to people’s connection with the issue. Wearing a knitted scarf displaying the daily temperatures around your neck push you to connect with issues in personal ways. Activism that is visible and personal allows the political to exist in the everyday through clothing.
