It seems difficult, at least in my head, to not understand what the AIDS Quilt essentially means. While I understand those who thought it almost ‘romanticized’ the disease and wasn’t a strong enough call for it to be taken more seriously, it seems like that wasn’t really the entire point in the first place. It holds more of an individualized aura than one of a clear cry for action; although focusing on personal lives of those who succumbed to HIV/AIDs could certainly get people to understand that the taboo surrounding it is taken out of proportion. Rather than taking it at a surface level and trying to demonize it in some way, just like the disease itself, people should see it for what it represents: lives of those who lived with AIDs. To me it is very beautiful and immortalize these lives. It wasn’t a curse, or gross, or a punishment for promiscuity- it was and still is a very serious disease that should continue to be taken more and more seriously instead of shying away from it.
