I do not know much about the AIDS epidemic, but the excerpt from the Craftivism text brought to light a variety of issues I never considered before. The most striking to me was the intersectionality AIDS in an intertwined mess of systems created by misogny. The Visual AIDS organization in NYC did great work to share the voices and stories of marginalized artists who passed from AIDS. I never considered the marginalization of craft, as the excerpt talked about too. Having to legitimize one’s work must have been frustrating but brings even more power to using needle work as a site of recognization and memory. In the second article, I was curious to learn about “passage quilts,” a tradition at funerals that I never knew about. There is a deep history to textiles and handmade materials like quilts that I find interesting. I wonder if more people knew how much depth there is to the subject, how popular it could really get.
