AIDS Quilt

AIDS Quilt

I had a difficult time being able to focus and read this piece.  The first image from the AIDS Quilt was a bit disturbing because I’ve worked in a hospital where low-income HIV and AIDS patients came for treatment.  I would fill their monthly prescriptions for Ensure because they needed nutritional supplements.  Honestly, I read this piece in pieces.  I found it interesting that this project (for some) should be viewed as opening the wound versus healing the wound of HIV and AIDS. Also, I was a bit confused about the make-up of the quilt.  I thought the first photo was the entire quilt (which is probably why it was a bit difficult to digest); correct me if I’m wrong, but the quilt is a bunch of panels from different people who have been impacted by the disease. I was raised in the 80s, so I was conditioned with the same thought process as most of the world when HIV and AIDS was still new and carried stiff judgement, along with a guaranteed death sentence.  I like the idea of this quilt.  I hope to see remnants of it one day.
