The article we read for todays class, “Facing Floods in the Middle Ages”, has a lot we can learn about from history. I personally was unaware of these written accounts of flooding and drought so many years ago but found it so interesting to see the different ways in which communities dealt with the issue. What I thought was really interesting was the stories of a God or Gods answering the prayers of people by immediately brining rain, I have doubts that it occurred the way it was written but it is still interesting to see the trust they put in their faith to fix their earthly problems. Under the section “Recovery and Resilience,” I liked how the author spoke about faith and science coming together to account for the natural disasters people at that time were facing. Leaders and plain folk knew that weather was a systematic thing and that it is routine, but they still wove in faith by having weather as a divine will. Lastly, I enjoyed the section on Noah and the Flood and more specifically the mentioning of The Cathedral of Bourges. I think depicting peoples fear of death in the way of flooding and this idea of an event that could wipe out humanity is a strong image for this cathedral to put at its doors for everyone to see. I think it is also smart because as the climate changes weather event will become more severe and some people may feel like they need to be saved in faith so they can be saved from the flood.
