Ecofeminism and Circe

I really enjoyed the Ecofeminism reading for this week, as it forced me to view nature in a way I had never considered before. This reading made me realize just how connected women are to nature. Through nature’s depiction as being a woman, women and the environment have become inherently linked. To me, this makes a lot of sense as to why men typically see the environment as theirs for the taking, as this is often how women are considered. In particular, I enjoyed Daly and Starhawk’s commentary on ecofeminism. I thought it was interesting that according to Daly, there used to be a gynocentric world where women flourished and had complete control over their bodies. Compared to our current patriarchy, a world where women had such a connection with nature and freedom of their choices seems far off. Daly likened men to parasites who feed off of women’s energy. I thought this was an interesting contrast to the depiction of women as being derived from pigs, as mentioned in the Semonides. Starhawk expresses the idea that women are inherently bonded with nature because of our ability to bring life into the world. I thought this connection between childbearing and nature was beautiful, as giving birth was compared to as an act of magic. It is so interesting to consider just how linked women are to nature. This article made me consider the implications that come with that connection in a way I had never thought of before.
