Upon reading “The Original Green Campaign”, I was surprised to learn that Pope Francis had declared that climate change is a “social doctrine” and “ecological responsibility” of the Catholic Church. I don’t personally know much about the Catholic Church, but the fact that Pope Francis stepped forward with his position on climate change is promising. The head of Catholicism professing that climate change is an emergency is pivotal in the understanding of the severity of this issue for people who blindly follow their religion. Reading this article, I thought it was fascinating that Hildegard has so much influence over the way we view climate today. The concept of “viriditas” and the selections from the illuminations and scivias definitely led to me understanding more about Hildegard and what she stands for. The interconnection of viriditas with life and God’s greening definitely stresses an emphasis on the environment. Whether she realizes it or not, Hildegard’s writings definitely show an importance of nature in the Christian faith.
