Hildegard and her interpretations

This week I really focused on the interpretations Hildegard makes with regards to her visions. We spent some time discussing this in class, but seeing what Hildegard herself had to say about this piqued my interest. Many people in class on Monday agreed that based on the description of Hildegard's cosmic egg, the image they would have created was vastly different than the image which Hildegard approved. However, this image is incredibly important to bear in mind when interpreting Hildegard's visions and when considering Hildegard's interpretations.

Hildegard prefaces her interpretations of this vision with the statement that she heard God's voice. I wonder if God's voice provided the interpretations or simply the information upon which she based the interpretations. In particular, I question the significance of the egg shape as Hildegard interprets it, mostly because I don't think a shape can really cast meaning on the progression of time. I, personally, think that the egg is more a symbol of birth than anything else. The size of the egg seems to indicate to Hildegard the power and might of God. I do think this is a possibility, but I am not sold. I wonder how people in her time thought of Hildegard's interpretations.

I was also really interested in the part where Hildegard discussed the light and darkness on the mountains and how they could not affect each other. This seems counterintuitive to what happens in the physical world, but it could very well be a vision which is not subject to the laws of physics. I think that this means that good and evil will be in the world regardless of what happens.
