One aspect of this reading that was very interesting to me was Raleigh's account of an attempt to bring Christianity to the "New World" on page 133. This story intrigues me because Raleigh portrays the spread of Christianity as a dire need for the people. He emphasizes that they knew nothing of the religion and were therefore going to be denied "life everlasting." This point of view differs from the discussion we had in class about Raleigh's desire to take control of the new world and encourage domination over them. This account seems optimistic about the spread of their religion until he explains that many notable figures of the native people were taken hostage and sold as slaves. This whole story is interesting to me because it provides a new perspective to Raleigh and the ideas and things he believes in while writing down the stories of his journeys.
