Colonial Portrayal of the Natives and New World

The pictures in the Raleigh readings depict scenes of the natives they encountered during their colonization. The pictures tend to focus on portraying the natives as extremely wealthy but also cannibal savages. My Christianity class discussed how early Christian missionaries created stereotypes about indigenous people being cannibals to make it seem like they were a lesser race and needed to be saved. Raleigh does the same thing with these paintings by showing scenes of cannibalism and deformities like the picture of the headless natives with faces on their chests. The paintings also show how natives would dress themselves in gold before eating a meal. This shows that the natives had wealth and could be useful in growing England's economy. The lushness of the land in the background of the paintings also serve as a motivation to find more land to spread out because of all the deforestation and overfishing that was happening in Europe.
