In Raleigh’s The Discovery of Giuanna, there are many images depicting the natives in a way that makes them seem animal-like and completely different from those who read about them in Europe. These pictures displayed people naked and scavenging for necessities. They are shown to have no modesty or privacy of any form. Even depictions of headless people are in this book.
This is likely done to make the Europeans see the natives as almost a different species from them. They are seen as ignorant and in need of saving. They wanted to depict the natives in such a way that would draw people in. Make them curious about how people could live this way. In a way it's a lot like those modern save the poor children in Africa commercials. They show Europeans back home something that seems so strangely different from them that they want to know more and they want to save them from themselves.
