The fable of "Two Mice" is a story that perfectly represents what I want to discuss in the podcast project coming up. It portrays the human race when we were centered around hunting and gathering and contrasts it to the way we live now. The country mouse represents pre-agriculture and living off the land. There was never a drive for excess food or material wealth. The town mouse represents modern living and the luxuries that come with it. The story begins with Town Mouse going to visit Country Mouse to check in on how she's doing. Country Mouse prepares a meal of nuts and peas and Town Mouse starts bashing her for not having nice things to eat, which shows the contrast between hunting and gathering and civilization. Town Mouse takes Country Mouse to the city with her and introduces her to all these new wonderful foods that she claims will last "forever and the next day." However, this paradise is shattered for Country Mouse when the butler checks the pantry and sees the mice. This scares Country Mouse and she swears off modern living and returns to her home in the plains. I see the butler in this fable as a symbol for the consequences of living outside of nature and abusing the land and natural resources.
