I thought it was interesting how some scholars believe that Sappho was actually straight instead of lesbian. I have always read her poetry as being about her lesbian lovers because it felt so obvious to me. I also thought it was interesting that the classical greeks stereotyped the women of Lesbos as "boy crazy" so to speak. I've never heard of this perspective and was taken aback by it. To me, Sappho's poetry is so obviously about her lady lovers especially looking at Sappho 94. In this poem she talks about the lovely things her and her lady friend did including having flowers in their hair and releasing their desires. Some scholars even believe that she was ugly and that she was rejected by men because she was crazed by lust. Just from reading her poetry, I can't figure out how these scholars came to that conclusion. She also doesn't just write about her lovers, she also writes a lot about nature. Some examples of this would be poems 101a and 104a. I don't think she should be put in this box of being some sex crazed woman because of her erotic poetry. Her writing is very important in learning about this time period, and I think these scholars have kind of lessened her importance by just brushing her off as some kind of lunatic.
