Sappho and her poetry have long been questioned. Many believe that she was not a woman, but a man writing as a woman. I agree with Ella Haselswerdt and I really just do not like this theory. Despite the fact that most of the time I find these kinds of conspiracies hilarious and fascinating.
She is one of the only women of the time that wrote poetry and even more rare is the fact that so much has survived. I immediately assume that the reason people are pushing so hard to convince the world that Sappho was a man is just misogyny and homophobia. After reading a little more I realized that maybe they do have an argument and it is possible that Sappho could be a man. Personally, Sappho will always be a woman in my mind I love the idea of queer woman’s ancient poetry too much.
