I’ve heard the term “Sapphic” before but I never understood the true meaning of it. After reading this article on Sappho, I learned so much about the way homosexuality was perceived in the ancient world. I think it’s interesting that men try to belittle Sappho’s rich history, particularly in the example in which one man shared his theory in which Sappho was actually a man. This just goes to show how nowadays, men are so uncomfortable with the idea of lesbianism and female sexuality being represented in ancient times. After reading some of Sappho’s poetry, I was struck by Haselswerdt’s assertion of the importance of having a queer poet from the ancient world. So many of her poems express themes of sexuality and feminism, and their meanings still resonate today. I also thought it was interesting that a lot of historians have been trying to argue that Sappho was known for pursuing men. It was interesting to me to see how the term “lesbian” has evolved over time.
