Hello, folks!

The semester is almost upon us, so I wanted to set some expectations for our first day together. This is normally the day we go over the syllabus and set course expectations, and we'll be doing the second, but not the first. Our class is very small, so I want us to have a conversation about where you all need/want support in your performance journeys and then will return with a syllabus to Thursday's class.

Tuesday, then, is going to look like a conversation. I'll share my main learning objectives for the course and my thoughts about general class structure and course policies, we'll do some introductions for folks who don't know each other, and then we'll chat. Please come prepared to discuss the following:

  • What guidelines would you like to see in the space to help you feel able to be productive?
  • How do you see yourself as a performer? What are your areas of strength? What are areas where you'd like to build skills? Are there boundaries you currently have that you'd like to work on growing or specific kinds of content you'd really like a chance to work with? Are there specific kinds of technique or tools you don't have under your belt yet and would like to? (That might look like big categories like "audition more effectively" or get into the nitty-gritty of specific acting theorists you'd like to learn more about.)

Please bring a phone/laptop/some other way to access Moodle, as I'll toss my working version of the syllabus (the skeleton with course policies, a place to put our community agreements, etc.) up there before class and we'll look at them together.

I will, as usual if you've had classes with me before, shoot you an intro questionnaire to fill out, but that will come after our first conversation. As always, I'm expecting that you'll work at the level of your boundaries, but my hope is that everyone will be coming to the space Tuesday with a willingness to reflect where you are as an artist in an authentic way rather than feeling the need to perform either expertise or self-effacement. I look forward to seeing you soon!
