For the sake of the assignment's stipulations, I decided to focus on my interview with the Shinkendo dojo rather than the interview with the historical expert.

Excellent source for visuals and terminology. I can see Thomas finding himself going down the "dark" path in his quest for revenge. Perhaps, in order to keep his quest funded, he takes some kill-for-hire jobs, thinking at first he is helping other achieve justice, but then he finds out he killed an innocent person. Besides Anakin Skywalker, this also makes me think of the character from Memento, who unknowingly becomes a killer-for-hire, all the while thinking he is getting revenge for his own wife's murder.
To address the question of "why no guns," maybe the Steelmonger could be a vocal fan of ancient Japanese traditions, and this helps explain why he has banished guns in the region. All guns and all bullets are confiscated, and Steelmonger pours a lot of resources and manpower into collecting them and melting them down. Just a thought.
