Funny, but the first idea to which I'm replying is not on this list. It is, however, the story I think you're doing first — the history of Rhodes Scholars at BSC.

In shaping the story, here are some things to include:
- What IS a Rhodes Scholar and what is a Rhodes Scholarship? I think it's worth mentioning that it has nothing to do with Rhodes College in Memphis.
- What are the years that BSC produced Rhodes Scholars? What genders were they? Were they students of color? What were their fields of study? I notice on this page that the first was named more than a hundred years ago: https://www.bsc.edu/about/tradition.html#
- What years did BSC produce finalists?
- How do these numbers compare to other colleges around the state?
- Find a professor or member of the administration who can speak to the significance of having these Rhodes scholars. Possibilities include Mark Schantz, Michael McInturff, Mark Lester
- What can current students do if they want to pursue Rhodes Scholarships?

Several of these ideas are big and bold. If EH305 went on forever, you could write them all!

Ever since I read this, I've been thinking about your idea of a story on Birmingham homicides. In fact, I have thought so much about that idea that I actually thought I had ALREADY written to you about it. That would be my #1 vote for your story due April 21. It's such a huge topic, you'd have to find a way in. And the way in I'd suggest would be the lists of Birmingham homicides on Bhamwiki (http://www.bhamwiki.com/w/Category:Lists_of_Birmingham_homicides). You could write about how they are listed here by year and you could interview the Bhamwiki founder about why he does it. You could also point to trends and include recent coverage, city policing policies, etc. I hope you'll do it and I'll be glad to guide you through.

My #2 voice would be mental health at BSC. You could do a fine roundup of resources available for students, talking to counselors and to any students who have used the services.

I think either of those stories would be very strong, and doable by the deadline.

I've decided to go with the mental health story. I've been working on this story already and I got interviews with Cara Blakes, who is the Director of Counseling Services, and three students of different class standings. I'm really excited about this story!
