Demo Rehearsal Specifics

Hello, folks,
Thanks to the people who reached out to clarify the assignment for tomorrow! You're using the How To Ground Plan 101 breakdown from p. 123-128 and taking the ideas there about how power shapes the space/the space shapes our understanding of power to produce your version of the scene in the chapter from p. 149-154. You're welcome to use the given circumstances Converse provides (with, of course, the understanding that you won't necessarily have two differently gendered actors) or to choose your own.

So, to be specific, each demo rehearsal will look like this:
- The director will give the stage manager their ground plan, on which furniture placement is clearly indicated and measured. The stage manager and ASM will go into the theatre, measure out the ground plan using a measuring tape, and set up the space.
- While the space is being set up, the director will start talking with the actors, telling them the story of the scene and doing any necessary table work.
- Once the space is set up, the director and actors will block the scene in the space; the stage manager will take blocking notes and keep track of time.
- After the scene is shared, we'll give feedback on the scene and the ways in which it is responding to the prompt (physicalizing subtext and power dynamics), but we'll also talk about how the director and stage manager executed their roles. The observer and ASM are specifically charged with watching and responding.

At the top of class, I will provide:
- A tape measure.
- Copies of the scene.

At the top of the class, you should come prepared with:
- Your written ground plan.
- A plan of attack for your rehearsal.

If you have any further questions, please reach out! Orders and roles will be more or less randomly generated, so please be ready to hop in wearing any and all hats tomorrow.

Best Wishes,
Lusie
