One thought that kept crossing my mind was is there a blind living community? I know when we discussed hearing impairments it was mentioned that there were communities for only people with hearing impairments, is that the case for people with visual impairments as well? Also, I believe that teaching forms of communication for children with these sensory disabilities is important. I mentioned in our hearing disability lesson that I thought sign language should be taught at a young age so everyone has some understanding of it, the same thing applies to reading and writing braille.
These are some really awesome questions that I am also interested in. I know they discussed schools for the blind and how some students attended that rather than public school, but she also mentioned that fewer and fewer students were attending a school for the blind. I am not sure if there is a community aside from that. I would love to know more about it.
I grew up wishing I knew some sort of sign language or how to read and write in brail. I think this would be an awesome course they should offer in schools and could almost be offered as a 'foreign language' since most people need that to graduate. The blind community part really interests me I have never thought of that before and the would be honestly really cool if there were certain communities for certain disabilities.
Start thinking about our community and see who might need special consideration is important. One way we could help those with visual impairments within our community is to make the environment more accessible and easy to navigate in order for those people to get out more easily and safely. Great point!
