Truthfully, this video with Ms. Mays reminded me why I am so excited to become a teacher! This video was a fantastic reminder of why it is so pertinent for all educators to only have high standards for students. Students are capable of much more than one may commonly assume, and it is pertinent that we push them to the highest of horizons. In particular with students covered under IDEA, teachers can fall into a common trap of unnecessarily and inappropriately infantilizing students. Ms. Mays did a great job at pushing students to only the highest bar, which is a practice that all teachers need to work with their students on.
Additionally, I enjoyed learning about how textile learning becomes so important for learners who are visually impaired. I appreciate how Ms. Mays went so above and beyond to get I* (student name censored for confidentiality) tool that would help with learning, such as brail printing all of the work he needed herself. It made me ponder that perhaps all learners would do better with more tactile learning incorporated? Additionally, I was interested by the assistive technology that she mentioned using, as well as the assistive technology and practices that were used with Lilly Grace. Lilly Grace's sweet spirit and desire to learn touched me; she was so eager to learn and it made me feel that our schools need to fueling a love to learn for all students! I liked the putting the ball in the muffin tin activity, and wonder what specific skill that is targeting?
Overall, I really enjoyed watching these videos and was inspired by them!
