The thing that stuck out to me the most while watching the video was how intentional Mrs. M was. She was very aware of the language that she used and how she said that some words are incorrect and gave a reason why. I also found it fascinating how she has expectations for children with disability just as she would a typical child. I think of the story she told about how the principle clapped for one of her students for doing a daily task the every other student does. She took that as an insult and I think this is how we should start responding. This reminds me of a quote that I wrote down from one of the videos we watched in class. "We're so afraid of being rude that we make people feel invisible." I think this is where as a people have to 'unlearn' what we have been taught to understand about disability and its community.
Very well written Piper. I agree, I think in order for our society to become more accepting, we as a society need to unlearn how we have been taught to treat individuals with disabilities. We need to bring disability into everyday conversation more, and show that they are regular people with a disability and not defined by their disability.
Well said Piper. I agree with you on the basis that us as a people need to show people with disabilities that their disability does not define them as a human being it is time we start maturing as a people and forget the ways we have always looked at these people.
