The entire interview with Ms. Mays was very informative about the blind community and how they navigate the academic side of things. Throughout the interview it kept becoming prominent that many "typical" people tend to underestimate those in the blind community. Much like the principal patting the student on the back for being able to use stairs, we tend to disregard their strengths and think that they are unable to achieve the same tasks as fully sighted individuals. Students who are sight impaired may need extra help to get to the same place like extra help over the summer to help them become more comfortable with the layout of the campus or extra equipment like the zoom camera that allowed them to better see worksheets and problems written on the board, but these students are still capable of the same things as sighted individuals. We as a society need to learn that individuals with disabilities are just like us and capable of doing the same things, they are not defined by their disability.
