The film The Defiant Ones was a very intense film. It vividly shows the Essence of the kind of racism that existed at the time. The way it is presented is done in such an upfront and bold way with both of the main characters, being of opposite races, being literally chained together. My immediate reaction upon hearing of the film before seeing it. I honestly thought it would miss the point that was trying to make. After watching the film I realized that the story is told in such a way the point comes across very clearly, and then some. At first, Sidney Poitier’s character comes off as what I imagine white people of the 60s thought of African-Americans at that time. As the movie goes on, it becomes clear that he is very intelligent and is crucial in the survival of both of the characters. A critique of this movie from me, who is not a film expert, would be the scenery. This movie is said to take place in the south, but a lot of the scenes seem to be dry desert-looking places. Being someone who has been in the south their entire life, I would have expected to see a lot more trees.
