“Describe the controversy of the film version The Color Purple”
Steven Speilburgs The Color Purple (1985) was based on a novel written by a balck writer Alice Walker and was highly rated by some critics but by some they stated it was “manipulative and overproduced”. The black community also had mixed reviews of the movie, the NAACP stated that they weren’t a fan of how the black males in the movie were portrayed. The movie portrays black brute men that are oversexualized and violent towards women and doesn’t dramatize the struggles of black men in a dominant white society in fact it completeley passes over that fact and ignores it. The movie portrays black men only showing violence towards women not even towards themselves or white men just purley against women giving them a violent stigma. The problem with the film is that it completely changes the theme of what the novel was supposed to portray, from a poor rejected black woman in her society to a disneyesque film with big moments to make a family film and not accurately depict what the novel was originally supposed to be.
