In the beginning of the 1990s many changes were coming about in regards to acceptance of the black community in larger roles of society. One large instance of this occurring is when William Jefferson Clinton was elected into office as president. When he was elected president he appointed a large number of minorities into his cabinet, including African Americans. Many say this set American on a course to reshape itself after horrific events involving the murder or severe brutality towards the black community. Also during this time it was noted that new perspectives on American history in regards to challenging things that had been taken as fact for so long. This led to changing perspectives on the nations social views in regard to ethnic diversity and integration within American. The nation was starting to get a fresh view on the topic which led to greater acceptance. With all of this combined the film industry let down its doors in a sense and began accepting black directors as something more than just a black director making a black film. They saw them as real directors with actual visions and allowed them to make the kind of real films they wanted to produce.

Something that I found interesting within the reading for this week, was the large discussion on Whoopi Goldberg. I have always known who Whoopi Goldberg was, because who wouldn’t, but I don’t think I had any idea just how significant she was during the rise of black people within the film industry. In her early years acting it was disastrous with bad film after bad film. Just when people thought she was making a come back she was hit again with a bad film. People took a lot of her performances in bad lights and it kept stalling her. For the Whoopi Goldberg I know today, I never would have guessed her career had done such a rollercoaster and tanked far too many times. I would really like to see the film Ghost now to understand how she made her footing again within the industry because it appears this is the one that set her on the right track again. After this film her career seemed to be shown in a good light once more.

great response. I'm glad these readings are inspiring you to watch older films. Goldberg is a talented actress indeed, despite what some may think of her current persona.
