Angela Basset was one of the most successful actress of the 90s one would say. She attended Yale school of Drama which in itself is a major accomplishment as for years it was one of the top drama schools within the United States. Her career really took off when she starred in the film What’s Love Got To Do With It. Within this film she portrayed the icon Tina Turner. This film was so successful that she received a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for best actress. After this film she established her name within the industry as someone to be reckoned with. She still went through tough times with criticism from people who didn’t appreciate her work leaving her to not have roles come too easily to her as they may have for say a male actor. However, there were people within the industry itself took her seriously and wanted to continue to see her shine.
One topic I found interesting within this chapter was the discussion on Whitney Houston. I never really knew Whitney Houston acted. I had always known her as an impeccable singer whose life was cut too short. Apparently, her career took off as an actress when she starred in the film The Bodyguard in 1992. This film had an extreme and undeniable amount of success with money flowing in from all over the world. Another film she was given was Waiting To Exhale that came out in 1995. I have never seen either of these films so of course I really had no idea she acted. She also received a role where she got to portray Dorothy Dandridge which proved to people all over she was one of the greats within the industry. I really enjoy her music so I am curious to see these films to see the other side of her career I never knew about.
