Vann's Project Proposal

For my project I would like to do a video essay on the film, The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019). In this video essay I would explore the themes of gentrification, loss, friendship, longing for the past, and ignorance of our would today. The film centers around Jimmy and his best friend Mont as they try to reclaim a house built by his grandfather. Along the way they face struggles that make the two start to wonder if the city itself even wants them in it. This film is pretty personal being that it is based off of Jimmy fails life, who starts as Jimmy in the film and wrote the film. After watching this film for the first time I actually had to watch it again and do a bit of research to really understand it. After doing my research I realized that it was because of my ignorance that I did not understand the film the first time. I still remember that feeling and after that I really had my eyes opened to the world and not just to my world. I am really appreciative of that and would love to further show the importance of this film in my video essay.

Just now saw this post. I was looking for proposals a few weeks earlier.
Looks like a good project. Definitely focus on the film as a contribution to the African American experience, not just a personal film.
