Trent Feehan - Project Proposal

What I would like to do is write a paper that examines all of the roles of Giancarlo Esposito, mainly the ones where he serves as an antagonist. I wanted to do this because Esposito has played so many villains over his career, with it going as far back as his role of Julian in School Daze. Why I believe this would be a sufficient topic for a final project paper is that for one, Esposito has played many villains in both movies and TV, but also has portrayed each and every antagonist with complex and unique motivations that set them apart individually. And even more so, not a single one of his antagonists are flat or caricaturized; they are complex characters with differing motivations, personalities, and aspirations that make them all amazingly written and performed. And lastly, villains are without a doubt my favorite topic to discuss in film; they are arguably the most important character to the narrative and the concept has developed into an art that I enjoy dissecting very much. It would be an honor to examine all of the antagonists Esposito has played in his career, and how his characters have changed cinema's antagonists as a whole.

Just now saw this post. I was looking for proposals a few weeks earlier.

I love the topic. Be sure to relate your work as much as possible to the African American experience, not just to Esposito as an individual performer.
