Tyler Perry is a really polarizing figure. While general audiences tend to love his films, many believe that Perry uses old stereotypes and that his films harm the black community. At the center of these criticisms is the character of Madea, who many consider to be a blatant mammy stereotype. Madea was introduced on the big screen in 2005, but had previously appeared in Perry's stage plays. Tyler Perry announced he was 'retiring' Madea in 2017, to both outrage and excitement, however it's important to note that Madea has returned. Madea is played by Perry in drag, which many cite as offensive to black women. Spike Lee is a notable detractor of Perry, calling his work 'coonery buffoonery'. When I looked for sources outside of Bogle, I found that a lot of these sources were several years old, which I found interesting. Tyler Perry is still a massive force in black cinema, and yet the discussion around him has sort of frozen.
good response about Perry, but the assignment asks for a second paragraph.
