Whispering- John Green

The chapter of Whispering starts by discussing the importance of time management and the ability to be orderly when going about day to day events. In this chapter he defines two types of people; those who go with the flow and the “Airport Alex”. Green defines himself as an Airport Alex and worries about being punctual until one day when his daughter whispered in his ear it reminded him that there is more to life than completing the task at hand. I believe the inspiration behind writing this chapter is not about the whispers themselves, but rather how a simple distraction can alter your rankings of an activity's purpose. For him it may be a whisper, but it is often found with the gentle reminders our family and friends give us. A life of significance doesn’t have a set meaning nor does it have a procedure which is why a distraction from our daily lives benefits us by making us rethink and sometimes change our itinerary. This interaction between him and his three year old daughter illustrates how a plan can go so horribly wrong and yet have a positive outcome. In order to give this a rating I must first define what terms I am rating this chapter on. This chapter is going to be rated on my relationship with the text, if and how the text benefits me, and overall coherence the chapter has with the themes of the book. This chapter has strong ties to my morals as I hate to be late to things especially if another is counting on me. It also benefits me because it allows me to change perspective on what defines my morals. The chapter itself does tie in with the creative stories in the book. Taking this all into consideration I give it… 4.5 stars.
